WELCOME TO WOODSPRING!
Woodspring Conservative Association
warmly welcomes you. We hope you will find
our web pages interesting and helpful and
that you might even consider joining us!
We are people who believe
in Conservative principles and the Conservative
way of doing things - freedom of the individual
coupled with responsibility to help those
less fortunate. We therefore try in any way
we can to make sure that the people who run
our lives, by way of local government as well
as our national and European parliaments,
are Conservatives, too.
Our members come from all
walks of life and all age ranges. Some like
to be very active within the Association,
serving on committees and helping with all
aspects of the organisation. Others are keen
to attend fund-raising social events. Some
do all those things.
In supporting our Conservative
M.P., Liam Fox, we offer a range of activities.
We try to cater for all interests.
During election campaigns,
we are the ones who deliver the leaflets,
stuff the envelopes, answer people’s
queries, drive the cars, stand at the polling
stations – anything at all which may
persuade people to vote for the Conservative
candidate.
We are entirely self-funding
and receive no money from outside sources.
We have to pay for every bit of local information
you receive during those election campaigns
- every piece of Conservative literature,
every ‘phone call – all paid for
with money raised by our Association.
We have many active branches
in all areas of the constituency including
the surrounding villages. Each has its own
committee, elected annually, of chairman,
secretary, treasurer, etc. Association members
belong to whichever branch is appropriate
for where they live and may, or may not, choose
to be actively involved on their local committee.
Committee members arrange fund-raising social
events – coffee mornings, lunches, teas,
dinners, quiz nights, barbecues, skittles,
antiques shows, the list is endless.
At Association level, we hold
lunches, dinners – or even breakfasts
or teas – with invited Shadow Cabinet
members and MP’s from other constituencies
as guest speakers. This gives our members
and their guests the opportunity to hear at
first hand all the latest gossip from Westminster,
what is going on in the Conservative Party,
and also to ask those burning questions we
feel we can only ask in private!
Liam attends as many of these
functions as he can manage, culminating in
the very popular ‘Dinner with Liam,’
which usually takes place in early summer.
In 2007 we launched the North
Somerset Conservative Business Club, details
of which can be found on this site. The meetings
have proved to be very popular, covering a
wide variety of topics of interest to local
businesses.
In addition to the local branches,
there is the Conservative Women’s Organisation
Committee (the CWO) which meets regularly
for a political discussion, as well as organising
its own fund-raising social events.
We also have a Ladies Luncheon
Club – which is just that. The Ladies
get together for an excellent lunch about
six times a year, to which interesting speakers
are invited. Food for thought in more ways
than one!
For the more politically minded,
one of our sub committees is the PLGC –
Political and Local Government Committee.
Members of this committee meet regularly to
discuss current affairs and how they might
affect the outcome of elections, as well as
formulating plans for the running of those
elections.
The governing body of Woodspring
Conservative Association is its Executive
Council, made up of branch committee members.
The Council meets twice a year, to consider
– and ratify, or not – recommendations
made by the Management Team, which oversees,
on a day-to-day basis, all the activities
outlined above.
We have two members of staff
in our office at 71 High Street, Nailsea.
Hélène Vaughan, who is the Constituency
Organiser and Denise Bull our Administrator.
The office is generally open from 9am until
5pm Monday to Friday.
All of our social events are
listed on this website, together with the
contact details of the event co-ordinator,
anyone who would prefer a paper copy just
needs to call the office and one will be sent
out in the post.
